Acne is a common inflammatory skin condition that occurs when hair follicles (pores) become clogged with oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and sometimes bacteria. This blockage leads to visible skin lesions and inflammation, most commonly on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. It can be caused by excess oil production (often influenced by hormones), clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation.
There are different types of acne including:

- Whiteheads – Closed clogged pores
- Papules – Small red, inflamed bumps
- Pustules – Pimples with pus
- Nodules – Large, painful, deep lesions
- Cysts – Severe, inflamed lesions that can cause scarring
Anyone can get acne, but it is most common during times of hormonal fluctuation such as the teenage years and peri-menopause. There can be a genetic component to acne- therefore if your mother or father had acne, you may be more likely to develop it. It can also be caused by pore clogging products and poor skincare.
Untreated acne can cause severe effects on self esteem and confidence and can often lead to skin scarring if not properly managed.
